Scarlett is a 13 year old chestnut QH mare seized by King County Animal Control on January 19th, 2010 and currently residing at the main SAFE facility. She came to us with a BCS of 2, and had lice. She is approx. 15h, extremely sweet and easy to handle. She was living with 3 other mares and several other farm animals (live and dead) in a small area with about a foot of mud and feces. Her feet are overgrown and flared, she has some rain rot and scratches on her hind legs, and she is in desperate need of dental care but she is in otherwise fair condition. She was palpated for pregnancy but while she has obviously had foals in the past and was likely used as a broodmare, no fetus was found on palpation.
Scarlett had at least three old abcess tracks on her right front as well as one actively draining abcess in her sole. Her left front had an even bigger, deeper abcess at the toe which had several pus pockets. Both were opened up and she is now bandaged and wearing boots with an epsom salt poultice to help draw the fluid out. She is likely lame on both front and thus was not showing any obvious lameness. She does have scratches/mud fever on both hind legs but was tolerant of having her feet handled.
Scarlett is not available for adoption at this time.
Update (2/20/10):
Scarlett is doing great! She's eating well and her abcesses have finished draining and look good. She still has patches in her coat from the lice (which are now gone) but she's shedding like crazy so I imagine she will look great in a few weeks. She does still have scratches on her hind legs but those are improving as well and she's tolerating having them treated a bit better now, so they aren't quite as sensitive.
Update (3/5/10):
Scarlett's previous owner was charged with two counts of first-degree animal cruelty today.
Seattle Times Animal-cruelty charges filed against Enumclaw woman
KING-5 TV Dead, emaciated horses, sheep lead to animal cruelty charge
Because of the television coverage of the story, Scarlett has been positively identified as PEPPY SKIPA JEWEL, a 1997 mare by Peppy Super Socks out of Peppy Briquet. She has had 4 registered foals but has no show record.
Update (5/1/10):
We had rode Scarlett last weekend and she is obviously a well-trained western horse. She was very, very safe and quiet and very responsive to the seat and neck reins very well. I think she will make a great family horse, trail horse, or kid's 4H mount.
Unfortunately, she will remain on hold for the time being as her owner is still attempting to retain ownership of her. As long as she continues to pay a monthly bond, we will not be able to adopt her out permanently until she either changes her mind and surrenders her or the case goes to trial and she loses ownership of her there.
Update (6/9/10):
As the Thomas case has been resolved, Scarlett has been signed over to SAFE and now can be made available for adoption. This is one very lucky mare, because she is currently in a foster home that wants to adopt her. Pending adoption!
