We have a new staff member to introduce to everyone…her name is Terry Phelps and she is working part time at SAFE Harbor Stables as our Barn Manager. The position of Barn Manager was previously held by our amazing trainer, Brittney Stewart, but as often happens with amazing trainers, Brittney’s own training business suddenly took off, making it necessary for her to cut back her position with SAFE. Because she’s done incredible work with the SAFE horses, it made sense to keep her on part time as our trainer and bring in someone new to manage the barn, essentially splitting Brittney’s full time position in half.

Terry holds Portland for the farrier

Terry Phelps has been the Barn Manager at SAFE now for a few months, and we could not be happier with the work she is doing. Among the first challenges faced by Terry when she took over as Barn Manager were Chance’s shoe boil and Strider’s abscess, so she’s already spent a great deal of time wrapping limbs and soaking hooves! Her days at SAFE Harbor are a whirlwind of activity: turning horses in and out, grooming, bathing, feeding and administering medication, doing ground work training, holding horses for the farrier and vet, working with the volunteers, riding Miah twice a week, and a hundred other duties. Through all of this, she has a smile for everyone, a great sense of humor, an obvious love for each of the horses, and an unbridled enthusiasm for SAFE. To say we got lucky when we found Terry would be an understatement for sure!

One look at Terry’s resume will tell you just how lucky we are to have her on our team. She spent two years in Calgary, Alberta, Canada working for Olympic dressage rider Bonny Bonnello, managing a training facility with over 45 horses in residence. Terry is an accomplished rider herself, having competed in dressage through Intermediare I and schooled Grand Prix. Throughout her riding career she has started horses under saddle, showed horses at sales, extensively competed in Dressage throughout Region 6, and helped beginners learn to handle and ride horses. She is comfortable around green horses and has exceptional medical knowledge of horse related injuries and illnesses. In addition, she has experience working with horses on ground work, lunging, long lining and some liberty work.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Terry yet, please plan to stop by SAFE Harbor Stables during our next Open House on October 27 from noon to 3pm.
