Congratulations to Amy Owens, our September Volunteer of the Month! For the last 2 years and 3 months, Amy has been a dedicated force at SAFE, consistently improving the lives of our horses. As a vital member of the Thursday morning chore shift, Amy shows up week after week, no matter the weather, ready to work with a can-do attitude. Her kindness and welcoming smile brighten everyone’s day, making the barn a warmer, more inviting place. Beyond her dedication to the horses, Amy’s contributions to our community are invaluable. She brings people together with her positive energy, always lending a helping hand and offering support to fellow volunteers. Her hard work and genuine care for each horse are truly remarkable, ensuring that they receive the best care possible. We are incredibly fortunate to have Amy as part of the SAFE community. How and when did you first get involved with horses?
I was about 5 years old when I rode my first horse, an old mare named Candy Babe. She was my sister’s first horse. She was stubborn but had a heart of gold and taught me the respect and bond between the rider and their horse. It’s very majestic. 
Do you have one now you want to tell us about?
I don’t own a horse now but dream about it often.
What do you like most about volunteering with SAFE?
I really enjoy the people and being outside getting dirty. It’s been such a fun experience getting to know such an amazing group of wonderful people coming together for such a great cause. It’s hard to believe that any of the SAFE horses can’t feel that love. Of course just being around the horses is good for my soul.
Do you have a favorite SAFE horse? If so, why?
Montana was my first love at SAFE. Something about his gentleness really got me.
What do you do when you are not horsing around with us?
I work at the UWMC as a cardiac sonographer. I worked full time for many years and switched to part time for the past 5 years to be home more for my son. I love hiking, camping, and being in the mountains or on a beach.
Do you have family or special people in your life who support your volunteer work that you would want us to mention in your write up?
My husband David and my son Brady.
