Congratulations to Nancy Knight, our October Volunteer of the Month! For the past two years, Nancy has been an invaluable member of the SAFE community, consistently dedicating her Friday and Saturday evenings to ensure our horses receive the care and attention they deserve, no matter the weather or time of day. Rain, snow, or shine, Nancy faithfully shows up for her PM chore shifts, keeping paddocks clean, providing fresh food and water, and, most importantly, offering our horses a generous dose of love and care. In addition to her regular shifts, Nancy is always willing to lend a helping hand when extra support is needed. She also devotes special time each week to grooming our beloved minis, Shasta and Sunny, reminding them just how cherished they are. Nancy’s unwavering dedication, reliability, and hard work make her a true weekend warrior, and we are deeply grateful for all she brings to SAFE. Thank you, Nancy, for your kindness and tireless commitment—you truly make a difference! Read more about Nancy below.

How and when did you first get involved with horses? Do you have one now you want to tell us about?

I was very fortunate to have horses in my life as I was growing up. I remember going to the barn, as a youngster (4 years old) getting my Shetland pony, Billy Blaze, and bring him back to the house every day. Billy Blaze was my first love. After Billy I owned Sunshine and Red Rascal. My last love was my Thoroughbred, Stillwater. I rode competitively with her at Evergreen Equestrian Center. I was able to take Stillwater with me to WSU. I have wonderful memories with each and every one. 1980 was the last year that I owned a horse.

What do you like most about volunteering with SAFE?

I love being around the horses, the smell of the barn, and the people are a pleasure to be around. I feel right at home.

Do you have a favorite SAFE horse? If so, why?

I enjoy all the horses at SAFE. Each one has a unique personality.

What do you do when you are not horsing around with us?

Most of my time is spent keeping up with my grandchildren, and their schedules. I have recently retired from Riverview School District.

Do you have family or special people in your life who support your volunteer work that you would want us to mention in your write up?

My sister, Sally Walker, and my life-long friend, Lisa Fite, strongly encouraged me to volunteer at SAFE. They both said you need to do this because your love for horses. I also have the complete support from my family at home for the time I spend volunteering.
