The year is 2016. Hamilton is making waves on Broadway. The summer Olympics are happening in Rio. The cubs win the World Series. Lacey arrives at SAFE. Over the next eight years, a lot would change, both out in the world and here at the barn. SAFE would move locations, horses would come and go. But as the calendar shed its pages, one thing remained: a little red dun mare.

It is no secret that Lacey is one special mare. She may be small, but her opinions about things are quite the opposite: the farrier, volunteers cleaning in her paddock, other horses, being ridden – just to name a few. Figuring Lacey out was as straightforward as an MC Escher staircase, which, as you might imagine, made finding her a home quite challenging.

Until Janelle. Janelle, SAFE volunteer and twice over alumni adopter, was faced with the ever difficult moment of animal ownership of having to say goodbye to her beloved Mara, which would leave her other mare (and SAFE alumna) Cameo without a companion. There were a few options for potential friends here at SAFE, but Janelle had a Lacey-shaped soft spot in her heart, and decided to try her as Cameo’s new playmate.

There is always an adjustment when a horse moves to a new place and meets new friends, especially when said new friends are both of strong mind and opinion. But the stars aligned for this match to be a good one, and Lacey settled into life alongside her new horse and humans. Cameo and Lacey have even enjoyed some sweet nuzzling (sans squeals!) in amongst the bouts of ‘bitey face.’

The year is 2024, and Lacey has found a home. Congratulations, Lacey!
