An update from Sophie’s adopter, Julie:

I don’t know that I’ve ever posted an update here about Sophie but as we come off an incredible year of learning, effort, and new commitment to our journey, it seems fitting. Grateful doesn’t begin to describe it.

Some of you have heard me say that 2024 was the year of the horse. That’s an understatement. 2024 isn’t over but it represented a re-commitment to prioritizing my horsemanship, my on-going education, and connecting to my horse community again after mostly 5 years away to have a baby and kick-start raising an incredible daughter. 2024 has been about prioritizing my hopes, my dreams, my needs, and finding my balance.

Sophie has always been a gem. She’s been there when I had time and mostly picked up where we left off. But progress that way is slow and has bumps. It’s crazy what’s possible with consistency. She’s not the scrawny, plain, tiny filly she was when I adopted her 6 or 7 years ago. She’s a responsive, kind, lovely, massive mare, and incredible teacher.

So, while grateful doesn’t begin to describe it, I want the SAFE community to know that I am. To everyone who shows up physically, emotionally, financially. To everyone who creates these opportunities for others, past and present. To Terry Phelps, Joel Conner, Bonnie Hammond and so many others for being the glue… and to Sophie, thank you!

I hear so often that this work is for the horses, but I think it’s equally important for the human.
