Here is a little more information about Jane in her own words…
A bit about myself: I’m a retired office manager turned gardener/designer/laborer for a few years before retiring from that also. I’ve spent many years working in local not-for-profit organizations. I have a 25-year-old son, a 13-year-old rescued dog and an equally old rescued cat. I am active in my square dance club, homeowners’ association and garden club; play duplicate bridge and casual golf; tend my vegetable garden beds and perennials on my small property just inside Woodinville city limits. My grandparents, all from Sweden, were pioneers in Seattle, Bremerton and Poulsbo. I grew up in a military family, and spent most of my adult life in Hawaii. I moved to the Pacific Northwest 20+ years ago. I love going to the ocean, especially in wintry weather.
How long have I been volunteering with SAFE: Since October 2012, which is really hard to believe! That’s more than a year and it seems like only months. How time flies…
Why I volunteer with SAFE: I’ve always been drawn to animals and have never, ever understood animal abuse. I started riding, primarily English, some Western pleasure, as a child and rode throughout college — in fact, having an equestrian team is what drew me to my choice of college. I’d even dreamed of having my own equestrian school; life got in the way. I read about SAFE in the local paper and began to research the organization. I was impressed with its mission, professional organization and fiscal responsibility for the rescued horses, and signed on as soon thereafter as possible. I absolutely LOVE being back in the barn around the animals I’ve adored as long as I can remember.
My favorite horse: That’s an unfair question! Each has its own marvelous quirks. Most favorite? Probably Dottie, although Oscar feels mighty special and is so handsome, and Skittles’ friendliness puts her right up there near the top.
