Congratulations to Ken Kohanes, our April Volunteer of the Month! For over a year, Ken has been an invaluable member of our Facilities Team, showing up at least twice a week and dedicating more than 250 (clocked) volunteer hours to making a big difference here at SAFE. From repairing fences and digging trenches to leading volunteer groups during work parties and stepping in for chore shifts when needed, Ken embodies the spirit of generosity and dedication. His hard work, kindness, and quick wit bring positivity to every task, making him a joy to work alongside and to see around the farm. Ken, we are so grateful for your commitment to SAFE and for sharing your time, skills, and heart with our community. Thank you for everything you do; we couldn’t do this work without you! How and when did you first get involved with horses? Do you have one now you want to tell us about?

How I Got Involved With Horses:  I started with horses when I was about 10 years old. My Dad had horses when he was a kid, he was always interested in them and really wanted to get my brother and me doing the same. We got an Appaloosa stallion first for him and quarter horses for my brother and me. Mine was a 15 hand sorrel named Sunny which I road for 4H showmanship, etc and a lot of trail riding, and then I got Snowflake, an albino Arabian which I also used for 4H showmanship also. I do not have a horse now.

What do you like most about volunteering with SAFE?

I enjoy working with horses again and working with the other Volunteers here at SAFE especially my facilities crew to make it a safer and more comfortable place for the horses. Also the Great Volunteers here.

Do you have a favorite SAFE horse? If so, why?

My favorite horse: is Ranger, he’s a beautiful Appaloosa and reminds me of the ones my family had.

What do you do when you are not horsing around with us?

In my off time I’m working around the house outside tending my berries and trying to get more time to go 4wheeling with my Jeep.

Do you have family or special people in your life who support your volunteer work that you would want us to mention in your write up?

My Family/Special People: My wife Ginni Guest got me involved here and showed me volunteering is fun and a way of making new friends.
