Congratulations to Kim Boase, our December Volunteer of the Month! Her kindness, compassion, and genuine love for our horses and her fellow volunteers are evident in everything she does. Kim’s hard work, care, and leadership make an immeasurable difference in the lives of our horses and the success of our team. Thank you, Kim, for the countless hours, the incredible energy, and the endless love you bring to SAFE. We are so grateful for you! Learn more about Kim below.
How and when did you first get involved with horses? Do you have one now you want to tell us about?
I don’t remember a time when I was not drawn to horses. Growing up on a farm in SW Minnesota, I got my first pony when I was 5, a Welsh pony named Rusty. As I got a little older we bought a beautiful blue roan named Gypsy. My sister and I rode nearly every day after school and weekends with friends who also kept horses at our farm. When we weren’t riding we hung out in the barn and pasture.
What do you like most about volunteering with SAFE?
I love being at SAFE, seeing the horse’s heads leaning out of the barn stalls or in their paddocks. I love watching them heal, become healthy, and grow into good horse citizens. And, the people…I have met so many incredible people who share a love of horses and animals in general. I’m looking forward to learning more and increasing my involvement.
Do you have a favorite SAFE horse?
Until recently I’d say my favorite horse was Bijou. She was curious, loved attention, and it was hilarious watching (and listening) to her eat the hay in her stall. She made such a mess! Recently I have started grooming Zuri. She has been very patient with me as I learn how to do things the SAFE way. I’d say she is my new current favorite.
What do you do when you are not horsing around with us?
I am employed by Harborview Medical Center – working in traumatic brain injury outcome research. I love gardening, animals, happy hour with friends, Seahawk games, and hold season tickets to the 5th Ave and Village Theaters. My grandchildren live in AZ — I love visiting so they can wear me out!
Do you have family or special people in your life who support your volunteer work that you would want us to mention?
My husband Brian has always supported my volunteerism – at SAFE as well as all the other places I have volunteered for over the last 40 years. I am also very grateful for Sue Coulter – my dear friend who introduced me to SAFE.
