The Snohomish County Council is holding a Public Hearing on Wednesday, December 19 to discuss an ordinance that would prohibit horse slaughter in Snohomish County. Not only is this a crucial measure for putting a stop to plans to re-open Florence Packing in Stanwood as an equine slaughter house, this ordinance could influence the passing of similar legislation in other Washington state counties and ultimately help put the brakes on efforts to reinstate slaughter in the United States. This is a very real opportunity to “Think Globally, Act Locally” by saying no to slaughter right in our backyards.
If you are opposed to the inhumane practice of equine slaughter, please plan to attend this Public Hearing to demonstrate your support for this ordinance. The more people who can be there to show that they favor this ban, the better chance it has of being signed into law. Join your fellow horse lovers in a show of solidarity again slaughter by attending this meeting. Members of the public are invited to speak at the meeting to make their case for or against the proposed ordinance — each speaker will be allowed 3 minutes to present, and this is not mandatory by any means, just another opportunity to do your part to save horses from a terrible and inhumane end. Being there for the horses is the most crucial thing!

No NO No. It was a disgusting stenchy place before and it won’t be any better this time around. Only difference will be a higher population to complain. No, No, NO PLEASE
This is just wrong
Please stop slaughter instead give the horses to rescues that can help them find forever homes. there is no need for this the horses suffer and are fightened. It is a cruel way to have them live out the last days of their lives. Please stop this horiffic thing from happening.
Hi. I am confused about something that I hope someone can help me with. This bill is Ordinance 12–106 and it does not ban horse slaughter. Rather, it bans the commercial slaughter of horses for human consumption. It does not ban horse owners from killing, butchering, and eating their own horses, nor does it ban commercial slaughter of horses for non-human consumption. That is what the bill is. Is that what folks understand the bill to be?
Another question: Is there in fact any business in Snohomish County which slaughters horses for human consumption? Is there one?
Ed
Hi Ed,
You are correct that the ordinance being voted on this Wednesday is to ban commercial slaughter of equines for human consumption in Snohomish County. Florence Packing in Stanwood WA operated as a slaughterhouse from 1972–1992, and although the owner has denied having any plans to resume equine slaughter, this ban would effectively prevent that from ever happening at that facility or any other in the county.
This is a part of our greedy government to take over the “last icons of our wild west”. Shame on them, and may they rot in hell!
a update on what the result of the meeting was? Iam sick as i thought it was this evening at 5 and just realized i missed it
