Our first Volunteer of the Month for the new year is George Meredith, who is a member of the Facilities Team! George can be found at least once a week (often more) at SAFE, repairing and building and making the farm work just as it should. He lends his skills to SAFE and in return, he gets wet and muddy. If you haven’t had the opportunity to get to know him already, here’s a little bit about George in his own words.
How and when did you first get involved with horses?
I first became involved with horses as a youth spending summer on my uncle’s horse ranch in Eastern Oregon. There was a substantial lapse in any horse involvement until my neighbor, good friend and current volunteer Debbie Meyer, introduced me to SAFE.
What do you like most about volunteering with SAFE?
Without a doubt what I enjoy most about volunteering at SAFE is working with the other dedicated volunteers. As a member of the facilities team, I find real joy in completion of each task which all seem so unique.
What do you do when you are not horsing around with us?
In my spare time I spend many hours on my bicycle trying to ride at least one hundred miles a week. Not so easy this time of year. I am also involved with the county parks being on a trails advisory committee and volunteering for various work parties. Last but not least we have two Labrador retrievers who demand attention and daily and lengthy walks in the park.
Do you have family or special people in your life who support your volunteer work?
Being in facilities I seem to get really dirty! Not just boots but also jeans, shirts, jackets and gloves. Special thanks to Lynne my wife for sending me to SAFE in clean and safe attire.
