Congratulations to Megan Kavanagh, our January Volunteer of the Month! Who better to help us kick off the new year than Megan, whose dedication and compassion have been an integral part of SAFE for nearly three and a half years? Megan’s kind spirit and warm smile create a welcoming and positive environment for both horses and humans, making her an irreplaceable member of our community. From her consistent efforts on the Friday AM Chores Team to stepping up as Co-Shift Lead, then Shift Lead over the last 2 years, and her invaluable contributions as a night check volunteer. Megan cares so deeply for our horses, and her unwavering commitment ensures they are not only well cared for but also loved and supported so they can thrive. We feel incredibly fortunate to have Megan as part of our community and are deeply grateful for the time, care, and heart she shares so generously with both our horses and our people. Thank you, Megan, for all that you do! Learn more about Megan below.

How and when did you first get involved with horses?

As long as I can remember, I’ve loved horses. My cousins had horses when I was a kid, and I bought myself my own horse (without my parent’s permission) when I was 14.

Do you have one now you want to tell us about?

I’m currently leasing a big, handsome Tennessee Walker named Marley. He’s a dream!

What do you like most about volunteering with SAFE?

The horses, of course! But the people, too. Every single person I have met at SAFE are the kindest, hardworking and welcoming humans I’ve ever met.

Do you have a favorite SAFE horse? If so, why?

My current favorite is Mahina. She has such beautiful expressive eyes. She’s a very special soul. I love watching her blossomunder the care from SAFE.

What do you do when you are not horsing around with us?

I work full-time for Kaiser Permanente as a writer/copywriter.  I spend Saturdays with Marley, and Sundays going on adventures with my husband.

Do you have family or special people in your life who support your volunteer work that you would want us to mention in your write up?

My husband Paul.  He’s never really been around horses, but he’s shown up with me to help out on the 4th of July and occasionally at Night Check if I happen to be alone. The Friday AM crew is the best and Amy is a great partner for Night Check.
