Susa Oram

Susa Oram

Please come together to help us recognize an outstanding young woman and all her hard work and dedicate to SAFE. We are honored to introduce you to Susa Oram, SAFE Volunteer of the Month for June.

Susa came to us last summer to fulfill volunteers hours needed for school. She had a large task to do: 90 hours by the end of the year. Volunteer Coordinator Heather was a little nervous that she wouldn’t be able to achieve her goal. Not because we didn’t have the need but because hours spent volunteering at the barn are hours spent working! She didn’t even blink. She took on three, yes THREE shifts a week. Sometimes it was just her on hot Sunday afternoons picking manure out of the pastures, which is grueling work! Her continued dedication continuously surprised us. Especially when she not only completed her 90 hours (before the deadline) but stayed on as a SAFE volunteer because she wanted too. She has volunteered at several special events. Recently at our Horse Show in August, where she sat in the hot sun ALL DAY. She also came to court for a show of support for SAFE horses Ivy and Boone. We can not say enough good things about Susa and wish we had 10 more of her. All to soon though she finished High School moved onto College. We wish her all the best for her future and we hope she visits us at the barn whenever she is home on break.

Here is a little more on Susa in her own words.…..

I’m so honored to be the SAFE Volunteer of the Month! Thank you all so much. To answer your questions:

1. I’m eighteen and I’ve lived in the Seattle area my whole life. I love animals, especially dogs and horses, and I’m thinking about pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. My hobbies include horseback riding and rock climbing. This fall, I’m headed down to Portland, OR for my freshman year at Reed College.
2. I’ve been volunteering with SAFE since August 2014.
3. I started volunteering with SAFE to fulfill my National Honor Society volunteer service. I was interested in SAFE because of my love of animals and the opportunity to work with horses. After I had fulfilled my National Honor Society requirement, I kept volunteering because I absolutely loved it. Volunteering with SAFE is so deeply rewarding, and I am constantly amazed by the progress we make with the horses and the incredible dedication of everyone at SAFE.
4. I love all the SAFE horses, but if I had to choose a favorite, I’d probably pick Bridgit or Finn.
