SAFE News and Updates

Zanadu’s surgery is a success!

We are very happy to share the news that Zanadu’s surgery, which took place yesterday at Pilchuck Vet Hospital, was a success. In fact, Dr. Bryant said that it went better than he had expected. The bone chip was very large, coming right off the corner cleanly. He was most pleased about the overall condition of the joint, he said it looked to be in great condition overall. He feels strongly that…

Shiloh training update

Brittney Stewart of B&D Sport Horses and Training has been working with Shiloh since May, and her progress has been nothing short of remarkable. Here’s an update from Brittney: Yes, the rumors are true, I am in love with Shiloh! I enjoy working with this brave little mare that on the rare occasion will display a sassy attitude that quickly dissipates with a leg on for forward and a growl to…

The Woodinville Weekly: Rehabilitation and Re-Homing at the Heart of SAFE Harbor

Rehabilitation and re-homing at the heart of SAFE Harbor by Deborah Stone published October 15, 2012  Meet Shay, a stunningly beautiful and perfectly proportioned Arab mare. A year ago, however, you would have been hard-pressed to have used these words to describe this incredible creature. At that time, she was one of 16 horses seized by Pierce County Animal Control. The animals had been part of…

Holly Update

It’s especially heartwarming to know that the SAFE programs help amazing horses and people find each other. We love getting updates about what they’re doing post-adoption. Former SAFE horse Holly and her guy Wade have been hitting the trails around Auburn & Enumclaw lately. Wade (and everyone around him) reports that she’s the apple of his eye and the two of them are having a great time…

October Volunteers of the Month: Kim and Sage Young

SAFE’s October Volunteer of the Month is a wonderful mother/daughter team. Kim Young and her daughter Sage have been Farm Chore volunteers for nearly two years. They are dedicated, reliable and hardworking. Sage is currently our youngest regular volunteer; her level of skill and maturity inspired us to accept her into our volunteer program. In addition to helping out at SAFE Harbor Stables, Kim…

photos of Aiden, by Justin Schmauser

SAFE is fortunate to have so many professionals as friends, who donate their time and talents to our rescue mission. One such person, photographer Justin Schmauser, has not only produced stunning images of some of the SAFE horses, he also supports SAFE as a monthly sponsor for both Sinatra and Strider, and as a frequent hands-on volunteer. Here is a small sample of Justin’s work, with our very…

Strider Update

Strider’s story will be featured in an upcoming issue of Pet Connection magazine, in an article written by Dr Hannah Mueller. Our Assistant Herd Health Coordinator Chelsey Braswell took these photos of Mr Strider a few days ago. Look at his back! It’s almost completely healed!! Way to go, Strider!! Let’s take a moment to thank someone else who is very special to Strider: SAFE volunteer Sharman!…

Zanadu’s angels

Zan’s been a SAFE horse since June of 2010, and she’s come a long way from the unhandled and underfed filly she was when we first met her. Restarted under saddle by professional dressage trainer Andrea Lucianna, Zan became a superstar riding horse — willing, easy, hard working, and so pretty to look at. Since graduating from training, Zan has been ridden extensively by select SAFE volunteers.…

Poster Hub

Looking for an easy way to help SAFE? Here’s a biggie — we have several healthy and well trained horses that need to be adopted. Every horse we adopt out means that we have space to take in a new horse who needs our help! So if you live in Western Washington, you can help us by putting up posters at your barn, your feed store, or anywhere that horse people gather, and let them know about these…

Justice for Bud and Brandy

Yesterday in King County Superior Court, a jury returned a guilty verdict on two counts of felony animal cruelty against the woman who starved and neglected Bud and Brandy. Here is their story. The call came late on a Sunday afternoon in February…two elderly horses, starved…can SAFE help? Dr Hannah was on site with officers from King County Animal Control, and the horses were being…

Straight to the horse’s mouth!

Once a year we hold the Fall Into Winter Feed Drive, and ask our good friends to donate funds that will be earmarked for purchasing hay, grain, and a moderate amount of horse treats for the horses in SAFE’s care. We’ll all feel more secure knowing that our haylofts are filled to the ceiling with Timothy hay and that we have plenty of “tasty, tasty grain” on hand. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by…

Chance’s History

Chance is a Thoroughbred cross gelding that was one of the first horses rescued by SAFE in early 2005. He was supposedly a failed bucking stock horse who was so sweet and friendly that no one wanted to see him be sent to slaughter. SAFE paid his feedlot ransom, and the Exceller Fund stepped up to pay for a couple of months of training for him. He was soon doing very well under saddle, as he was…

Oscar: A Perfect Gelding…A Perfect Gentleman

Oscar: A Perfect Gelding…A Perfect Gentleman

Oscar came to SAFE as a stallion, one of 16 horses seized from a breeding operation by Pierce County Animal Control in Dec 2011. Oscar had been starved and badly neglected. As a breeding stallion, he’d lived a life of isolation and was aggressive and “studdish” towards humans and horses. Oscar was gelded immediately after SAFE took possession of him, and for a period of a few weeks, he was only…

A new day for Khianna

The past several months have been a journey for Khianna. She went into training last June to be restarted under saddle, but unfortunately, she had some issues with bolting. Andrea put a lot of time into trying to work through these issues, and felt that Khianna’s bolting was a fear-based response that was developing into a learned behavior. She tried a number of different training methods with…

Louie’s new foster home

We’ve gotten a great update on Louie who moved to a great new foster home this past weekend. We’d also like to welcome Lisa to the SAFE family as a new foster “mom”! Louie has settled in great at his new foster home. He and the other Arab gelding — Shazam — have hit it off. In addition, we have a lot going on in our neighborhood — sometimes screaming kids on the trampoline across the road,…

An afternoon visit with Marta

Thank you to Marta’s foster mom Eileen for this wonderful update and video of our girl! Marta is doing well. She is sleek, shiny, a wee bit plump, perhaps, and getting fuzzier as the cool weather sets in. It is a little hard to judge her ideal weight because she was a brood mare for most of her life as I understand it. Consequently her “trim” may be a little more rotund than another horse. Marta…

Goodbye Dexter

Goodbye Dexter

This will not be an easy post to write. I’ve already made four or five attempts to get started, writing tired cliches…like “Letting a horse go is never easy” or “We know we can’t save them all” …and then hitting the delete key. Staring at an empty page. And finally putting the task off for another day. But when you run an organization based on transparency, you have to be as forthcoming with…

Charmeon joins the SAFE Harbor herd

Charmeon graduated from her refresher training course this past weekend and made the trip down to SAFE Harbor Stables where she’ll be staying while she waits for her perfect adopter to come! Char is a sweet and friendly mare who, as you’ll see from these pictures, is not at all standoffish! Rather than pose for my camera phone, she came over to say  “I’m ready for my close up!” Updated to add…
