Bigfoot? Big heart!

It would undoubtedly be quite a surprise to be hiking through the woods only to run into the legendary Sasquatch, the elusive man-ape creature said to haunt the forests of the Northwest. It was no less a surprise when we at SAFE received a donation in the amount of $5,000 from the 2012 Sasquatch! Music Festival, as we were totally unaware that we’d been selected as one of the beneficiaries of…

Zan at the SAFE Show!

A big thank you to volunteer Lara B for riding Zan at the SAFE show. They made a lovely pair! Here’s Lara’s report on her weekend with Zan: When we entered the dressage ring on Saturday, I’d only ridden Zan a handful of times. I found her to be an uncomplicated and confident mare, eager to work and game for almost anything. During her time at SAFE, she has had an extensive education, and she…

Louie at the SAFE Show!

Louie stuck to in-hand classes due to some back soreness issues but was quite the gentleman all weekend.  He placed 2nd in Halter and was very brave going through the trails class.  He was sweet and even tempered and charmed everyone who met him.

Lola at the SAFE Show!

Another big thank you to our incredible trainer, Heather Roe, who showed Lola and Louie at the SAFE show. Heather has been working with all the SAFE horses under saddle at SAFE Harbor, and her hard work really paid off as every one of the SAFE horses was a star at the show. Here’s Heather report on Lola: Lola was a complete delight all weekend. She was well behaved, cautious of new things but…

Shiloh at the SAFE Show!

From Shiloh’s foster/trainer Brittney Stewart of B&D Sport Horses LLC The SAFE Benefit Schooling Show was as big as a recognized show, without the pressure of a recognized show. Shiloh gained valuable experience points being in a big show atmosphere. She was keyed-up during Friday’s warm-up ride with the set-up of the vendors and spectator area on the berm. We had a longer warm-up period than I…

More Misty news, now with video!

From Misty’s foster: A few photos of Misty in case a potential adopter wants to see. One has her ribbons from the show on her back. 🙂 I also took a quick walk/trot/canter video each way this AM before bringing her back to SHS. It isn’t the best (my husband hobbled out about 1 minute after I got on her, so no warm up and thus some inconsistency in contact and no fancy trot), but at least…

Our good friend Amy Hagstrom made us a very generous offer last month…she took Misty to her home and worked with her under saddle and in hand for a month in preparation for the SAFE Show. A message from Volunteer Coordinator Debi Shatos

I am celebrating the one year anniversary of my job as Volunteer Coordinator. In that year, I have been incredibly moved by the quality of people who choose to give their time and energy to SAFE. Every time I put the call out for help, our dedicated volunteers answer it. And they bring their friends. And their co-workers. And their dads. Together, we accomplish great things. The recent 6th…

We are starting with 30 minutes of exposure for the next few days. We will be closely monitoring the healed area to be sure that there is no negative reaction. Strider seemed quite happy to be out enjoying the glorious sunshine…

When nice things happen to nice horses!

Sure, SAFE is all about the horses. They’re the reason we do what we do. Their beauty moves us, their stories captivate us, and their spirits lift us. “The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse’s ears.” We hear these words, and we don’t have to look too far to know exactly what they mean. But SAFE isn’t just about horses… it’s about people too. I’ve been working with SAFE for almost…

Louie in training

Louie is cantering under saddle! This was from Wednesday evening when Heather asked for the canter for the first time. He picked it right up with out any fuss and looked great! Heather has been doing trot (and now canter!) sets with Louie out on the track. He definitely enjoys being out in the open where he can really move out. Louie has come such a long way already. This is one to keep your eye…

Fire update

An update from Fire’s adopters! Hi, just a quick update on Fire. We had our farrier out on Friday, 6/29 for both Jack and Fire. Fire was just super for the farrier. He stood quietly and Teri, our farrier was very impressed with his good manners. We decided on just a trim this time he is doing better and better with tapping on his feet, but with just the riding here in the arena and on our…
