Strider settles in at SAFE
Strider is settling in at SAFE, making new friends. In the photos you see below, the holes on his back are skin grafts. They started out as tiny spots and after two months are the size of dimes. They will continue to expand out and hopefully fill out the unhealed area.
Strider is “home”!
After 7 months at NWESC, Strider has finally been released to SAFE. He still requires daily treatment of his wound area, we are going to be able to handle it ourselves. We’re thrilled to have the big guy at the SAFE farm.
Hello Scooter!
Scooter is notorious for being not very nice when in his stall, but all I got greeted with was nice ears! He seemed curious and interested in me but did not come over to say hi.
Oscar Update
Oscar had his teeth done this week and they were some of the worst teeth Dr. Hannah has ever seen. Huge points and ramps that caused ulcerations all along his cheek and had worn down the opposing teeth, in some cases down to the gum line. One broken tooth. He should be feeling much better now! Oscar also had two smaller growths removed, one from his eye and one from a hind leg, that Dr Hannah…
April and Lola at Windy Tides
We made a last minute decision to bring a couple of the rescue horses to get some exposure the outside world at the Windy Tides horse show at the Monroe Fairgrounds. We brought two horses — April who is 7 and been under saddle about 9 months, and Lola, our 3 year old Arab/Appy cross that has only been under saddle a few months. Both did great for their first outing!
Louie is looking better!
Updated photos of Louie posted today. He is gaining weight and shedding like crazy! His rain rot is completely healed, and he is starting to look much better!
Scooter & Oscar update
Former stallions Scooter and Oscar are both doing well and Dr Hannah feels like Oscar is ready to get his dental float and have his sarcoids removed, so he has an appointment scheduled for the 19th. Our plan is to send Oscar into training about a week after his sarcoids are removed. Oscar did well having his feet trimmed today, he had a mare standing behind him and a horse in a stall in front of…
Holly is once again available for adoption
Former SAFE-horse Holly was adopted last year to a family with a teenage girl. Unfortunately, due to some health problems and financial issues, they are unable to keep her. Once again, we are offering this wonderful mare for adoption. She is now 6 years old. Video clips of her under saddle available on our website. Currently located in Duvall, WA. Adoption Fee: $600. Adoption contract required.…
March Volunteer of the Month: Kyle Putnam
Congratulations to our March Volunteer of the Month, Kyle Putnam! Kyle has volunteered at the farm doing chores, as well as at the SAFE Benefit Horse Show and most recently as a foster home for SAFE horse Dexter. Please join me in offering Kyle a sincere “Thank You” for her contributions to SAFE! Here is a little about Kyle in her own words… How did you get involved with SAFE? “I’ve been…
Arnie Video
A video of Arnie, being ridden by his owner’s niece, a beginner who hasn’t ridden in a couple of years. This is Arnie’s first ride in a year. What a gem of a horse!

Something to make you smile…Welcome to SunnyD’s Bed and Breakfast
Dexter Update
Here’s an update from Dexter’s foster home: Ultimately, I’ve fallen in love with this little guy. If he was a hand taller or I was a hand shorter, I’d keep him. He’s smart, athletic, tough, and funny, everything I like in a horse. But I do think he deserves a rider who doesn’t tower over him quite so much. He absorbs my leg very nicely, but while I’ve gotten used to riding him, I think a shorter…
JR Intake photos
New SAFE horse JR arrived at the farm today. He needs to put on weight, and he’s very muddy from his previous home with a terribly matted tail and bad cracks in his hooves. He’s a remarkably polite horse with great manners. He is going to make someone an awesome partner. Regarding his training, his old owner said “He very much is a useful trained horse, easy to be around and ride, given a few…
Oscar and Scooter update, updated!
Oscar and Scooter were taken straight to Evergreen Holistic Vet Care on Saturday to await their gelding surgeries. Both stallions have proven to be extremely difficult to handle and their surgeries were bumped up to this week to get them done as soon as possible. Oscar was castrated today and Scooter will be done later this week. Photos below show Scooter during one of his short, supervised…
Shiloh Update
Shiloh has finished 60 days professional training. She’s still very green, but considering she came to us as a barely handled 5 year old, she’s doing very well! She has a sweet nature and a generally calm temperament.
Ego Afire Update
Fire is coming along so nicely! Still working on being balanced at the canter. We love this boy!

February Volunteer of the Month: Sherrie Adams
Congratulations to SAFE’s Volunteer of the Month for February, Sherrie Adams! Sherrie has been a hardworking SAFE volunteer since July of 2011. She originally discovered SAFE when she was looking for a horse to adopt. She saw Dexter’s before and after pictures, and was moved to begin volunteering. Sherrie did chores at the farm for a time, then she accepted the additional responsibility of…
Strider Skin Grafts Update
Seven days after after Strider’s skin graft procedure, Hannah removed the bandages to take a look. Strider has been a good boy, even though his banadages are itchy. It will be a bit more time before we know if it worked, but so far so good. Keep Strider in your thoughts.
April in the sunshine
Our friend Alexis shot these photos of pretty miss April enjoying a brief spell of sunny weather.
Never too much of a good thing…
