Featured charity of the week: SAFE!

We’re very pleased to announce that SAFE has been selected as the Featured Charity of the week for the Washington Military Department’s Combined Fund Drive. The Combined Fund Drive is a workplace giving program for Washington State employees, and SAFE got more than $1,400 from CFD donors in 2011 alone. We are very grateful to everyone who has donated to SAFE via the Combined Fund Drive! Does…

Fun with Jazzy & Joker

New photos of our little mini pair, Jazzy and Joker! We had one of our younger volunteers take them for a little spin this weekend (yes, I know she’s a little too big for them, we were just testing them out). They are indeed broke to ride, and so very cute! Now available for adoption! They are very cute, and we’d prefer to see them go to a home that will give them a job!

Shiloh & Miah arrive at SAFE

Here are a couple of photos taken by Chelsey on the day that Miah and Shiloh arrived at SAFE. They’ve just come off of a long trailer ride from Castle Rock, and they are still taking in their somewhat scary new surroundings. Here they look in horror upon the neighbor’s cows! Miah is Shiloh’s dam, but as you can see from these pictures, mom is a lot shorter than daughter ended up being!…

Strider becomes a SAFE horse

SAFE has taken ownership of Dutch Mills Farm barn fire survivor Strider. Strider’s owner had been facing financial difficulties before the fire took place, and had been trying to rehome this horse. Since the fire, Strider’s owner has faced enormous vet bills for his care, and unfortunately he was not insured. He is looking at several more months of care, and she can no longer afford it. SAFE was…

Khianna arrives at SAFE

Khianna arrives at SAFE

Khianna is one of a group of horses belonging to a woman who is battling cancer. When she realized that her strength would soon be fading and her finances depleted, she contacted SAFE for help. We listed the horses under our SAFE-Assisted Placement program, and together with Sound Equine Option of Oregon, we provided her horses with shots and dental care. We were very excited when Khianna was…

A porpoise AND a goal!

After eating many hays, I have had time to think about the rescue that I will be making. I’m not so good with words, so maybe rescue is the wrong word. I can really only actually give hays and tasty, tasty grain to the two horses who live with me — and Jay and Chance really don’t need to be rescued. Also I think they get more hays and more tasty, tasty grain than I do because Mom says I’m too…

The Honeycutt Nation

There is a new SAFE horse named Dixie, do you know this horse? She is very pretty but she is also very thin and sad. If I were near Dixie, I would not steal her hays because she needs to eat lots of hays and tasty grain and not be so sad. A horse should be a thing that is round, not a thing that is flat and pointy. How can someone look at a horse that is flat and pointy and think it is an okay…

Dixie Intake Photos

Dixie arrived at SAFE on Sunday Oct 9, 2011. She has a Body Condition Score of about 2–2.5. She has lots of old kick wounds and is covered in bot fly eggs. Dixie shows signs of a recent abscess or puncture wound to her left front foot but seems sound today. She’s extremely sweet and easy to handle — she loaded right up in the trailer and she stood quietly for an hour while we groomed her and…

Bud & Brandy Update

Bud & Brandy (aka: B&B) have been in their current foster home in Federal Way since late July. They spend their days just hanging out and occasionally chatting over their fence line with the young (27 years old) gelding next to them. While they don’t do much but graze & nap, their foster family says they’re no trouble at all…in fact they’re very pleasant to be around. They seem to…

Deeds — 10/8/11

We haven’t updated Deeds’ page in a while.  He spent his summer at a foster home up in Stanwood, where he was a companion to an older mare.  We have now moved him down to a foster home in Redmond, where he has a nice dry paddock and shelter and a buddy, a warmblood gelding of the same age and size, that also has some physical issues.  We’ve decided to downgrade Deeds to companion status.  He can…

Savannah Update

Savannah arrived at SAFE on Sunday, September 25, and if we haven’t created a page for her yet, it’s because she is already pending adoption with someone who knows her from her previous rescue experience. We are enjoying her at SAFE as she is a lovely mare who is very sweet and friendly. Here are some photos we’ve taken of her since her arrival. We’ll have more news about her adoption once it…

Mr Pibb has been fostered at beautiful White Birch Farm since leaving NWESC late May. His rehabilitation has come along very well, and he is vastly changed from the sad, skinny horse that first came to us. He’s been ridden in the arena and on the trails! We’re very grateful to White Birch Farm for taking such great care of Pibb!

Horses available through Pierce County Animal Control

Please bear with me, as this post will be long. Recently, SAFE was contacted by Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson to request assistance with several horses that have been seized or surrendered to their Animal Control agency that they have been unable to place into homes.  Over the past several years, PCAC has taken several steps to try to alleviate the “horse problem” in their county through…

April

She lived alone in a small muddy paddock with nothing to eat but potatoes. Her living conditions had already attracted the attention of Animal Control, but it wasn’t until she got tangled up in barbed wire that her owner finally surrendered her to the authorities. The barbed wire cut a 5” long and 4” wide gash into the muscles of her neck, exposing and just missing her jugular vein. When SAFE…
