SAFE News and Updates

The Honeycutt Nation

There is a new SAFE horse named Dixie, do you know this horse? She is very pretty but she is also very thin and sad. If I were near Dixie, I would not steal her hays because she needs to eat lots of hays and tasty grain and not be so sad. A horse should be a thing that is round, not a thing that is flat and pointy. How can someone look at a horse that is flat and pointy and think it is an okay…

Dixie Intake Photos

Dixie arrived at SAFE on Sunday Oct 9, 2011. She has a Body Condition Score of about 2–2.5. She has lots of old kick wounds and is covered in bot fly eggs. Dixie shows signs of a recent abscess or puncture wound to her left front foot but seems sound today. She’s extremely sweet and easy to handle — she loaded right up in the trailer and she stood quietly for an hour while we groomed her and…

Bud & Brandy Update

Bud & Brandy (aka: B&B) have been in their current foster home in Federal Way since late July. They spend their days just hanging out and occasionally chatting over their fence line with the young (27 years old) gelding next to them. While they don’t do much but graze & nap, their foster family says they’re no trouble at all…in fact they’re very pleasant to be around. They seem to…

Deeds — 10/8/11

We haven’t updated Deeds’ page in a while.  He spent his summer at a foster home up in Stanwood, where he was a companion to an older mare.  We have now moved him down to a foster home in Redmond, where he has a nice dry paddock and shelter and a buddy, a warmblood gelding of the same age and size, that also has some physical issues.  We’ve decided to downgrade Deeds to companion status.  He can…

Savannah Update

Savannah arrived at SAFE on Sunday, September 25, and if we haven’t created a page for her yet, it’s because she is already pending adoption with someone who knows her from her previous rescue experience. We are enjoying her at SAFE as she is a lovely mare who is very sweet and friendly. Here are some photos we’ve taken of her since her arrival. We’ll have more news about her adoption once it…

Mr Pibb at White Birch Farm

Mr Pibb has been fostered at beautiful White Birch Farm since leaving NWESC late May. His rehabilitation has come along very well, and he is vastly changed from the sad, skinny horse that first came to us. He’s been ridden in the arena and on the trails! We’re very grateful to White Birch Farm for taking such great care of Pibb!

Horses available through Pierce County Animal Control

Please bear with me, as this post will be long. Recently, SAFE was contacted by Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson to request assistance with several horses that have been seized or surrendered to their Animal Control agency that they have been unable to place into homes.  Over the past several years, PCAC has taken several steps to try to alleviate the “horse problem” in their county through…

Too many is good this time

Today is a day of buying PLYwoods and other things that are good for building horse houses. Once I knew for sure that I had all of my breakfast, I told Mom the secret I had about people buying PLY Woods for me. The secret was that these are the people who bought PLY Woods: Sheridan Jones Elizabeth Leech — three PLY Woods Heidi brandt — four PLY Woods Monica Cook Katie Chapman Suzanne Malakoff…

April

She lived alone in a small muddy paddock with nothing to eat but potatoes. Her living conditions had already attracted the attention of Animal Control, but it wasn’t until she got tangled up in barbed wire that her owner finally surrendered her to the authorities. The barbed wire cut a 5” long and 4” wide gash into the muscles of her neck, exposing and just missing her jugular vein. When SAFE…

A Happy Ending for Corona

Congratulations to Sheridan Jones who is the proud adopter of Corona! Sheridan is an eventer with an eye for a good show ring prospect. So when she rode Corona at the 2011 SAFE Benefit Horse Show, she recognized right away that this horse was a pro. They competed in English, Dressage and Hunters, and won many ribbons. At the end of the show, Corona was crowned Champion Rescue Horse and together…

Sometimes Mom needs a reminder

Like this morning. She came out to the barn and gave us all some tasty, tasty grain.…and then she went back in her house! After I eat my grain, I eat my hay, but today there was no hay! Mom forgot! Now from outside my little house, I can see Mom through the windows of her little house. After I went around the other side of the barn to see if Jay got any hay (he didn’t!), I looked into the…

Khianna Update — June 14, 2011

Update from Jeanette who, with help from our friends at Sound Equine Options, went down and helped the owner of the horses in Castle Rock get the horses up to date on all their routine care:  Khianna — Kianna was initially very sweet. She did seem to get a bit more agitated when Blu did but certainly not to the extreme that he did. We were able to halter her before the mild sedative was given.…

Miah Update — June 14, 2011

Update from Jeanette who, with help from our friends at Sound Equine Options, went down and helped the owner of the horses in Castle Rock get the horses up to date on all their routine care:  Miah — Owners state she has Khemosabi lines in her breeding. She was nice but took a little warming up to get her engaged. She allowed me to groom her in the initial group stall setting but we segregated…

Shiloh Update — June 14, 2011

Update from Jeanette who, with help from our friends at Sound Equine Options, went down and helped the owner of the horses in Castle Rock get the horses up to date on all their routine care:  Shiloh — Very Friendly. They call her an “In Your Pocket” horse. She was the first and friendliest of the herd. I found her very engaged with people, even new ones. According to the Vet, she’s got an…

I help Jay

Jay likes to take his food outside. He gets his food in his nice stall, but he likes to push it outside with his nose and eat it out there. Mom says, Jay! Don’t take your food outside! But Jay just looks at her like he doesn’t understand and then does it anyway. Jay is lucky that Mom loves him so much because something she doesn’t love is hay getting wasted. So when I go around the barn and…

April Update — 9/3/11

April has returned from training and has done phenomenally well.  In fact, she has been one of the easiest horses to start that we have sent our trainer thus far.  She has been very willing and generally uncomplicated to start — with no real bucking, spooking or major issues to work through.  She is still quite green, but she has finished her 60 days and is walk/trot/canter and has been out on…

SAFE Development Director

We have operated SAFE on a strictly volunteer basis for over 6 years, and during that time, every dime we’ve made in donations has gone straight to the horses. As SAFE has grown, the burden of work on the directors of this organization has grown too, along with the demands of each individual’s full time employment outside the rescue. We’ve made it work, but for some of us it’s meant essentially…
