A Happy Ending for Corona
Congratulations to Sheridan Jones who is the proud adopter of Corona! Sheridan is an eventer with an eye for a good show ring prospect. So when she rode Corona at the 2011 SAFE Benefit Horse Show, she recognized right away that this horse was a pro. They competed in English, Dressage and Hunters, and won many ribbons. At the end of the show, Corona was crowned Champion Rescue Horse and together…
Sometimes Mom needs a reminder
Like this morning. She came out to the barn and gave us all some tasty, tasty grain.…and then she went back in her house! After I eat my grain, I eat my hay, but today there was no hay! Mom forgot! Now from outside my little house, I can see Mom through the windows of her little house. After I went around the other side of the barn to see if Jay got any hay (he didn’t!), I looked into the…
Khianna Update — June 14, 2011
Update from Jeanette who, with help from our friends at Sound Equine Options, went down and helped the owner of the horses in Castle Rock get the horses up to date on all their routine care: Khianna — Kianna was initially very sweet. She did seem to get a bit more agitated when Blu did but certainly not to the extreme that he did. We were able to halter her before the mild sedative was given.…
Miah Update — June 14, 2011
Update from Jeanette who, with help from our friends at Sound Equine Options, went down and helped the owner of the horses in Castle Rock get the horses up to date on all their routine care: Miah — Owners state she has Khemosabi lines in her breeding. She was nice but took a little warming up to get her engaged. She allowed me to groom her in the initial group stall setting but we segregated…
Shiloh Update — June 14, 2011
Update from Jeanette who, with help from our friends at Sound Equine Options, went down and helped the owner of the horses in Castle Rock get the horses up to date on all their routine care: Shiloh — Very Friendly. They call her an “In Your Pocket” horse. She was the first and friendliest of the herd. I found her very engaged with people, even new ones. According to the Vet, she’s got an…

I help Jay
Jay likes to take his food outside. He gets his food in his nice stall, but he likes to push it outside with his nose and eat it out there. Mom says, Jay! Don’t take your food outside! But Jay just looks at her like he doesn’t understand and then does it anyway. Jay is lucky that Mom loves him so much because something she doesn’t love is hay getting wasted. So when I go around the barn and…

April Update — 9/3/11
April has returned from training and has done phenomenally well. In fact, she has been one of the easiest horses to start that we have sent our trainer thus far. She has been very willing and generally uncomplicated to start — with no real bucking, spooking or major issues to work through. She is still quite green, but she has finished her 60 days and is walk/trot/canter and has been out on…

SAFE Development Director
We have operated SAFE on a strictly volunteer basis for over 6 years, and during that time, every dime we’ve made in donations has gone straight to the horses. As SAFE has grown, the burden of work on the directors of this organization has grown too, along with the demands of each individual’s full time employment outside the rescue. We’ve made it work, but for some of us it’s meant essentially…

Lucy under Saddle!
Lucy has been at our trainer’s for the past month. They were hoping that she might work out for them as a personal trail horse and to be used in beginner riding lessons. She’s a little too hot/nervous under saddle to make a good beginner horse, however, so she has returned to SAFE and is available for adoption. Our trainer speculated that she has been ridden pretty roughly in the past as she…

Lucky update — 8/20/11
It’s been a while since we posted an update on Bucky B Lucky — mostly because there hasn’t been much to tell! Lucky had his surgery at Pilchuck on April 18th to remove the bone chips in his left front fetlock. The surgery was successful and while he still has some arthritis and bony remodeling in the fetlock area, he is sound and will be able to perform in dressage or pleasure/flatwork at all…

Not a show horse
It has been one week since the day after the day I got back home from the SAFE show, and I think I am ready to talk about it now. I was a very brave boy, but still I was not prepared for all of the sights and smells and sounds that come with being a show horse. I had a very nice friend come see me being a show horse, and she took me for walks and let me stare at many things. My friend is Holly…

Show time
My mom is working very hard on the SAFE Horse Show, but she is very happy because there are lots of horses who are coming to the show, and that means lots of dollars for the SAFE Horses and that is good. Mom is very busy but she still has time to come out to the barn and put on my hat so that the flies don’t bother my eyes. The Big Baby got a new hat because the sun made his nose red. Here is…

Organizational changes at SAFE
Allison Sheka, a long time SAFE volunteer and most recently our dedicated Volunteer Coordinator has decided to take a well-earned break from the demands of her position. Stepping in to take over as Volunteer Coordinator on a trial basis is SAFE Advisory Board member Debi Shatos. Debi has been volunteering with SAFE for the past 9 months. She started as a chore volunteer, so she knows her way…
