A 47-year-old woman has been booked into King County jail on suspicion of 10 counts of animal cruelty after more than a dozen horses were found dead or dying on property near Carnation.

An investigation began Friday when Snohomish County animal-control officers asked the King County Sheriff’s Office to check the property in the 1900 block of the Carnation-Fall City Road, said King County Sgt. Jim Laing.

Officers found several animals in distress and seized one horse, he said.

On Saturday, officers and a detective returned and found more animals in poor condition and several dead horses, Laing said.

The animal-rescue group Save a Forgotten Equine (SAFE) reported that six mares and foals have been taken in for care after being seized by the sheriff’s office, and a palomino colt has been hospitalized at a veterinary hospital. Laing said the investigation has been referred to the King County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
