Walker is a 17 year old bay New Zealand Thoroughbred gelding. He is 16.1 hands and weighs approx. 1150 lbs. He is NZ race branded and has the numbers 18 over the number 3 on his right shoulder and the initials “CR” on his left shoulder. We understand that the CR indicates the breeding farm he came from and the numbers say he’s the 18th foal registered from that farm in 1993. By researching these brands, we’ve discovered that his registered name is Chief Prospect. He was born on Aug 22 1993 and had 15 starts as a racehorse in New Zealand. He is by Indian Ore out of Bijou Lady (NZ) by Noble Bijou.
Walker and another NZ Thoroughbred were imported to the US and sold to a local family. The daughters evented on both horses and it is believed that Walker is registered under another name with the FEI and may have a show record with them. The sisters that rode these two grew up, moved on and left these horses with the parents who were not horse savvy. A local trainer was asked to take them on about two years ago. She got them up to date on their care needs and back into riding condition.
In December of 2009, Walker had a freak barn accident and ran head into a fence post, crushing his skull. This was not usual behavior for him nor a careless hazard. He was given exceptional care with Dr. Heather Stewart DVM. Walker has fully recovered from this injury but he still has a dent in his forehead. This does not appear to affect his performance in any way and he does not seem to have any lasting issues as a result of the accident.
He responds to seat and leg cues, is level headed and gives his best effort to accomplish what’s asked of him. He’s no slow poke though: he’s a forward and fun horse for a confident rider. He would be best suited to a balanced intermediate or above rider who wants to progress in their own riding or would just like to ride him for personal/recreational riding.
This past summer Walker was ridden in a local schooling show Dressage (First Level) & over 18” jumps. He did very well and even placed 1st in his jumper final. Because of his age, however, it is preferred that jumping not be his primary function. He would be a fantastic horse for lower level Dressage or English Pleasure and is great on trails.
Walker is UTD on all routine care including vaccines, farrier care and worming. His last dental float was May 2010.
He was evaluated on the following 17 performance items and passed 100%.
Halters – Leads – Yields Hind End – Grooms – Picks up all 4 feet – Cross-ties – Stalls – Trailers – Clips – Bathes/Hoses – Backs Up – Lunges – Saddles – Bridles – Walk – Trot – Canter
- Additionally, has demonstrated flying lead changes & can hold a steady circle
— Currently eats hay along with soaked grain, beet pulp, plus some supplements
— Generally calm (5–6 out of 10)
— Current housing is a stall with a large run & periodic pasture turnout
— He is ridden a few times a week to keep him going.
